A “suspicious” looking man carrying a concealed firearm in his backpack was arrested in Milwaukee on Monday outside the Republican National Convention’s screening perimeter, police said on Tuesday night, amid heightened security concerns following an assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump over the weekend.
The arrest took place a few blocks away from the Fiserve Forum where the RNC is taking place.
Milwaukee police told several news outlets that the arrest took place on Monday afternoon around 1 p.m. after law enforcement stopped a 21-year-old man wearing a ski mask and carrying a large tactical backpack.
U.S. Capitol Police stopped the individual a few blocks away from the Fiserv Forum where the GOP convention is being held—just outside the event’s screening perimeter for vehicles.
The “suspicious” looking person did not have a concealed carry permit for Wisconsin or any other state.
The police did not share any other details about the arrested individual, including his name or the type of gun he was carrying.
It is also unclear if the person was being deemed as a threat to the GOP event or its attendees.
