The Pittsburgh Steelers have been slow playing their rookie class.

First-round draft pick Broderick Jones did not make his first career start until Week 5 against the Baltimore Ravens, opening the game at left offensive tackle while Dan Moore Jr. was injured. Following a bye week, Moore is healthy again. However, coach Mike Tomlin is not saying who will start Sunday when the Steelers (3-2) return to action by visiting the Los Angeles Rams (3-3) at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif.

The offense could seemingly use a boost with the Steelers standing 30th among the 32 NFL teams in total yards and points scored.

According to Pro Football Focus’ grades, Moore’s 29.3 grade ranks last in the league among the 74 offensive tackles who have played enough snaps to qualify. Jones is 33rd with a 66.5 grade despite playing just 40% of the Steelers’ offensive snaps this season.

Jones’ 74.8 grade in the 17-10 victory over the Ravens was easily the best among all Steelers’ offensive linemen. Jones also played well enough to impress Tomlin, who believes game experience is always the best teacher.

“The in-helmet perspective of play that you can’t get anywhere else but playing,” Tomlin said during his weekly news conference on Tuesday. “He hasn’t been deficient in learning in any of the other venues. It's just a process and opportunity.”

Cornerback Joey Porter Jr., the first pick in the second round, has yet to make a start despite the Steelers being 25th in pass defense.

Porter has played just 23% of the Steelers’ defensive snaps. However, his contributions seem to be increasing weekly, including having a key interception – the first pick of his career — in the win over the Ravens.

Overall, Porter has defensed two passes and been in on six tackles, including three solos.

Porter hasn’t had enough playing time to qualify for PFF’s PFF cornerback rankings. However, none of the Steelers’ primary three cornerbacks have fared well in PFF’s eyes as Patrick Peterson is 76th among 102 players while Levi Wallace stands at No. 93 and Chandon Sullivan ranks 98th.

It would seem logical for Porter’s playing time to increase.

“With each passing week, we get an understanding of what the young guys are capable of,” Tomlin said. “We’re gaining a better understanding, particularly at the early portions of the year about how to best divide our labor up in an effort to win a game. We did against the Baltimore Ravens what we thought was necessary to win that game and will continue to do so.”

The Steelers’ other second-round pick, Keeanu Benton, has taken advantage of the opportunity that arose when Cam Heyward was injured in the season opener.

Like Jones, Benton made his first career start against the Ravens two weeks ago. He had three tackles (one solo) and one quarterback hit.

Through five games, Benton has recorded one sack, one forced fumble and 13 tackles (five solo) while playing 40% of the defensive snaps. He is a favorite of the PFF grading system as his 78.3 mark is 16th among the 123 qualifying defensive interior linemen.

“That is a young guy that is utilizing all of his avenues to get better,” Tomlin said. “The opportunity avenue has increased for him because of Cam Heyward’s injury. I think with more exposure, he is playing more consistently and getting more comfortable. I am excited about the continued trajectory of that.”
