The White House announced Tuesday the Trump administration had secured the release of American prisoner Marc Fogel from Russia as part of an “exchange,” freeing the American prisoner who was being held for more than three years on drug charges in what the U.S. government said was a “good faith” move in the right direction toward ending the Russia-Ukraine war.

Fogel, a teacher who was arrested for bringing medical marijuana to Russia in August 2021, was sentenced to 14 years in prison, The New York Times reported.
Fogel is leaving Russia with Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff and will be “on American soil and reunited with his family” tonight, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz said in a statement.
The statement did not say what the U.S. exchanged to secure Fogel’s release.
