The 10,000 job cuts will be in addition to the 10,000 employees who have already accepted early retirements or layoff packages, a downsize that will leave the agency with 62,000 full-time employees, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said.
The agency also said it will close five of its 10 regional offices.
The job cuts will affect about 15% of FDA employees, 18% of employees at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 6% of National Institutes of Health workers and 4% of employees at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing internal documents.
