Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, introduced legislation to implement congressional guardrails against the president’s tariff policies—less than a day after President Donald Trump introduced a sweeping tariff package that sent stocks nosediving and threatened to drive up prices for a long list of consumer goods.

The legislation would require Trump to notify Congress before enacting new tariffs and require Congress to vote whether to approve the new policy within 60 days of it being announced.

Grassley introduced the legislation along with Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash.

The bill is unlikely to be taken up in the GOP-controlled House and become law, but would signal Republican discontent with Trump’s tariff policies if it passes the Senate, where it needs support from at least four Republicans to pass.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
