The 2023 Emmy Awards gathered celebrities and industry giants on Monday after months of strike-induced delays, spawning viral moments with surprise appearances, eminently photoshoppable outfits on top of “evil gays” and a mysterious green goblin stalking the red carpet.
Jennifer Coolidge jokingly thanked “all the evil gays” after she pocketed the Emmy for outstanding supporting actress in a drama series for playing heiress Tanya McQuoid in The White Lotus, her second consecutive Emmy for the role and a reference to a viral moment from the season—”these gays, they’re trying to murder me”—before her beloved character slipped off a boat and expired.
Aubrey Plaza, who starred alongside Coolidge in The White Lotus and was also nominated for outstanding supporting actress in a drama series for her role as Harper Spiller, grabbed attention on the red carpet thanks to a Loewe dress that kicked the internet meme machine into high gear after being likened to a stack of Post-it notes.
Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker—the Blink 182 drummer also opened the show—got people talking after kissing in matching suits on the red carpet, their first public appearance since the arrival of their son in early November.
Saturday Night Live alumni Tina Fey and Amy Poehler returned to the Weekend Update desk at the awards, taking swipes at themselves and nominees when presenting the award for outstanding live variety show.

The Emmy Awards is one of Hollywood’s most-watched and most-hyped events. They are considered one of, if not the, highest honors in television. The 2023 ceremony was confusingly held in 2024 after writers’ and actors’ strikes resulted in the event being pushed back from its usual September billing. A few shows dominated the awards, notably Succession and The Bear, picking up six awards each, and Beef, which picked up five. Anthony Anderson hosted the show, incorporating his mother into the celebrations, who was tasked with keeping people on time when giving acceptance speech.
Veteran musician Elton John joined the elite EGOT club after picking up an award for outstanding variety special for his Farewell From Dodger Stadium, though he wasn’t there to celebrate due to recent knee surgery. EGOT is an acronym for those who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award. Just 19 people have held EGOT status, with John joining the likes of Whoopi Goldberg, John Legend, Audrey Hepburn and the most recent inductee, Viola Davis.
