Biden said he would not commute Hunter Biden’s sentence in response to a shouted question from the press pool as he was leaving a press conference in Italy.
On Wednesday, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre declined to comment on whether Biden would commute his son’s sentence, though she did again emphasize Biden would not pardon him.
As president, Biden has the ability to commute one’s sentence by reducing jail time or fines, though it wouldn’t imply innocence or remove civil penalties that came with the conviction like a loss of voting rights.
Hunter Biden was convicted on Tuesday of three federal felony charges for unlawfully purchasing a gun while addicted to drugs in 2018.
