Multiple people were killed and at least a dozen were injured on Tuesday after a powerful tornado ripped through the town of Greenfield in Iowa, before the storms that caused the tornado moved towards neighboring Wisconsin and Illinois and knocked off power for 160,000 homes and businesses early on Wednesday.
The tornado obliterated several homes and buildings in the small town of Greenfield on Tuesday.
In the aftermath of the tornado, Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Alex Dinkla told reporters, “sadly we can confirm that there have been fatalities” and at least a dozen people were taken to hospitals with injuries.
When asked about the number of deaths, Dinkla said authorities were “still counting at this time and…still working our search efforts” and they will be able to provide an accurate count sometime Wednesday.
The tornado destroyed several homes and buildings in the small town including the local hospital forcing authorities to transport patients to nearby areas.
A triage center has also been set up at the Greenfield High School, the local county health system announced in a Facebook post and urged people needing medical attention to go there.
This is a developing story.
