LOS ANGELES, CA - OCTOBER 09: Post Malone attends the 2018 American Music Awards at Microsoft ... [+]
When I first heard of Magic: The Gathering’s new Lord of the Rings set I thought it sounded pretty cool, but I admit I had somewhat mixed feelings about a one-of-a-kind ‘One Ring’ card. It struck me as a little gimmicky and the chances it would end up in good hands—and not in the grimy maws of an eight-year-old or sitting forever in an unopened pack—seemed dismal.
Then there was always the chance that it would be plucked up by some modern-day Sauron and used for evil. Just sayin’.

Thankfully, the card has been found, remains in mint condition, and was sold to an actual Magic: The Gathering player who happens to also be rich and famous.
Post Malone is a longtime fan of the collectible card game from Wizards of the Coast. He purchased the one-of-a-kind card for $2 million—about $10.6 million less than the most expensive trading card, a Number #311 1952 Micky Mantle—from someone named Brook Trafton. You can watch the rather lovely exchange in the TikTok below.
Now, I must say, this has melted my cold, cynical heart. Whatever doubt I previously had has fallen off, seeing what a joyous occasion this is for Trafton, and the genuine happiness on Post Malone’s face as well, as he not only scores a pretty neat card, but also makes a fellow human being very, very happy.
In the TikTok, Trafton writes:
When I found the One Ring, the first person who came to mind was @Post Malone. I have played MTG since I was a kid and obviously it would be amazing to keep this card. But for a guy like me, being able to sell it is life changing. I just really hoped it would go to someone who would appreciate it as much as I do. This is my dream come true, meeting Post Malone and him buying the One Ring card from me is literally a moment straight out of a fairytale. Post Malone @Magic: The Gathering you have changed my life. Things like this don’t happen to people like me, I guess it’s magic. I am forever grateful ???? ✨
Prior to this sale the elusive Black Lotus card was the priciest Magic card of all time, selling at one point for a whopping $615,000. A part of me thinks it deserves to remain the top Magic card simply because it wasn’t designed to be a one-of-a-kind card, which almost feels like too much artificial scarcity added into the mix.
Black Lotus
In any case, it’s a nice little feel-good story in the end. We can all feel a bit jealous that we didn’t buy that pack of cards, but it’s best to just enjoy the good fortune of others. I’m a sucker for a happy ending.
All that glitters is not gold, sure, but then again—sometimes it is.
