The PGA Tour and Commissioner Jay Monahan have taken initial steps to “restore any lost trust or confidence” as a result of the partnership between the PGA Tour and competing LIV Golf league that caught players off guard and shook up the men’s professional golf world just under two months ago.

The PGA Tour, its player members, player directors and Player Advisory Council have agreed on new transparency and governance measures that give its six player directors full transparency and authority to approve — or decline to approve — any potential changes to the tour as part of the existing framework agreement with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).

In other words, the Policy Board’s governing documents are being amended to make it clear no major decision can be made, at least in the future, without the prior involvement and approval of the Player Directors. That now includes Tiger Woods.

Woods has agreed to join the Tour’s Policy Board as a sixth Player Director, joining Patrick Cantlay, Charley Hoffman, Peter Malnati, Rory McIlroy and Webb Simpson. The board also includes five independent directors, among them Jimmy Dunne, who helped broker the surprise union after two years of bitterness and legal wrangling between the two leagues.

After that June announcement, player leaders joined together to demand changes and uphold the PGA Tour’s core principles of being a player-driven organization.

“This is a critical point for the Tour, and the players will do their best to make certain that any changes that are made in Tour operations are in the best interest of all Tour stakeholders, including fans, sponsors and players,” said Woods, who added a vote of confidence for Monahan in a press release issued by the PGA Tour. “The players thank Commissioner Monahan for agreeing to address our concerns, and we look forward to being at the table with him to make the right decisions for the future of the game that we all love.”

As part of the framework agreement announced in June, the PGA Tour would retain its tax-exempt status and continue to run its own events with Monahan as commissioner. But it would also become part of a new, collectively owned, for-profit entity that features the Saudi PIF as the exclusive investor alongside the PGA Tour, LIV Golf, and DP World Tour. Monahan would be the CEO.

As part of today’s announcement, Monahan said he’s committed to taking the necessary steps to regain trust of the players and stressed that his job in negotiations is to advocate for what’s best for PGA Tour members, with any agreement shaped by their input and approval. Woods included.

“Tiger’s voice and leadership throughout his career have contributed immeasurably to the success of the PGA Tour,” Monahan said, “To apply both to our governance and go-forward plan at this crucial time is even more welcomed and impactful.”

Under the new transparency measures, the player directors — through special advisor Colin Neville — will be kept fully aware of the state of negotiations contemplated by the framework agreement between the PGA Tour and the PIF. Neville will be provided full access to any documents and information to keep players informed.
