Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” is expected by several awards pundits to lead the nominations—with some predicting first-time Oscar wins for Nolan and actors Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr.
“Barbie,” last year’s highest-grossing film with $1.4 billion collected at the box office, is expected to make the Best Picture lineup with potential acting nods for Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling—though some pundits have predicted a directing snub for Greta Gerwig.
Yorgos Lanthimos’ fantasy comedy “Poor Things” is expected to land a Best Actress nomination for Emma Stone—who already won a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award this season—as well as Best Picture and Best Director nods.
Martin Scorsese’s three-and-a-half hour epic “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and Alexander Payne’s holiday comedy-drama “The Holdovers” are also predicted to earn large nomination hauls.
Nominations will be announced at 8:30 a.m. ET on the Academy’s website and social media profiles, as well as on ABC.
Will there be any shocking surprises or snubs? Some pundits have predicted the Best Director category may—once again—snub women entirely, though Gerwig, Justine Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”) and Celine Song (“Past Lives”) are considered contenders for a nod. Some pundits have speculated Ava DuVernay’s “Origin” may be a last-minute entry into the Oscars race after celebrities like Angelina Jolie and Ben Affleck hosted screenings during the final days of voting.
“Oppenheimer” has been the big winner so far this awards season after it collected a staggering $952 million at the box office and contributed to the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon. The film was the biggest winner at the Golden Globes, taking home prizes for Best Motion Picture — Drama, a directing win for Nolan, acting trophies for Murphy and Downey Jr. and Best Original Score. It also swept the Critics Choice Awards with a leading eight wins, including Best Picture.
