Oprah Winfrey is set to speak Wednesday at the Democratic National Convention, according to multiple reports—likely offering her coveted endorsement to Vice President Kamala Harris and continuing her support for Democratic candidates.

Winfrey was hesitant to enter the political fray this year, according to her longtime friend, CBS host Gayle King, who said Winfrey “hadn’t intended to be involved” and “tries to stay out of politics,” adding that Winfrey was still “tweaking” her remarks as of this afternoon.

King noted that Winfrey’s first major political endorsement went to former President Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential primary campaign, when he defeated former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination.

Winfrey endorsed Clinton in her 2016 campaign against Trump, but largely shied away from hitting the campaign trail on her behalf, and she endorsed Biden in his 2020 campaign, hosting a virtual get-out-the-vote event for him in battleground states in the final days of the campaign.

More recently, she endorsed Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., in his 2022 Senate race against TV doctor Mehmet Oz, who frequently appeared on Winfrey’s daytime talk show.

She also endorsed a host of other Democratic candidates in 2022, including Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., over Republican Adam Laxalt and Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., over controversial Georgia Republican Herschel Walker in the hotly contested Senate races where Democrats eked out wins.

Winfrey’s endorsements are known to weigh heavily on voter sentiment—her 2008 endorsement of Obama generated about 1 million primary votes, according to economists at the University of Maryland, who found a geographic correlation between votes cast for Obama and O magazine subscriptions, along with sales of books included in her book club.

Some research on Winfrey’s Obama endorsement contradict the University of Maryland findings. Nearly 70% of Americans said Winfrey’s endorsement would not influence their vote and 15% said it would make them less likely to vote for a candidate, according to a 2007 Pew Research Center study.

Winfrey has donated relatively small sums (in comparison with her net worth) to various state and federal Democratic political candidates and committees since 1992, according to OpenSecrets, which shows her most recent donations were in 2022.

We estimate Winfrey’s net worth at about $3 billion, making her America’s 14th-wealthiest self-made woman. She has parlayed her success as a daytime talk show host—which ended in 2011—into a sizable media empire.

Winfrey is scheduled to speak Wednesday, along with former President Bill Clinton and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Democratic vice presidential nominee, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, will close out the third day of the convention with the final speech of the night. Singer Stevie Wonder performed earlier in the evening Wednesday, and singer John Legend is scheduled to perform during the 10 p.m. EDT hour.
