North Carolina residents are under flash flood and coastal flooding warnings Thursday morning as Tropical Storm Idalia continues up the East Coast after killing three and destroying as many as 6,000 homes in Florida when it made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane Wednesday.

Up to 8 inches of rain is expected in the Carolinas Thursday and the National Hurricane Center has warned of "life-threatening flash flooding" in eastern and southern North Carolina before the storm moves offshore later today.

The storm brought maximum sustained winds of 60 mph to the area of Wilmington, North Carolina, this morning and Raleigh residents have been warned of flash floods and wind gusts that could reach 40 mph—a storm surge watch is in effect for Beaufort Inlet to Ocracoke Inlet and along the Neuse and Pamlico rivers.

South Carolina saw water levels higher than 9 feet at Charleston Harbor Wednesday night, the fifth highest water level ever recorded in the area, the National Weather Service said.

More than 300,000 people across Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas were without electricity Thursday morning—Nearly 142,000 people in Florida were still in the dark and an additional 105,000 in Georgia had no power as of 9 a.m., in addition to more than 50,000 people in the Carolinas.

“Trees are down. Roads are flooded,” the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said on X. “If you encounter street flooding, turn around.”

Idalia made landfall Wednesday morning on Florida’s Gulf Coast and was downgraded to a tropical storm before it hit Georgia and South Carolina the same evening. It is expected to stay a tropical storm until it moves away from land. Two people were killed in Florida Wednesday by the storm—one who lost control of his car while driving in the hurricane and another who drove his car into a ditch, local news reported. In Georgia, a man was killed after a tree fell on him. Videos and photos of the storm show flooding and coastal damage, roof damage, downed trees and flood waters as high as 5 feet. Pasco County, Florida, officials said between 4,000 and 6,000 homes were damaged and at least 16 buildings were hurt in Leon County, Florida—which includes Tallahassee. A 100-year-old oak tree fell on the governor’s mansion in Tallahassee, Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis said on X.

Idalia isn't the only storm moving in the Atlantic Ocean. Hurricane Franklin is moving away from Bermuda and bringing dangerous surf conditions and rip currents to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern coast, the National Hurricane Center said Thursday. Another storm, Tropical Storm Jose, formed overnight about 800 miles off the coast of Bermuda. It is expected to be absorbed by Franklin in the coming days.
