The Killer
There is a lot of debate about what exactly went wrong with Mindhunters after season 2 aired, and why it never returned for season 3 despite being acclaimed as one of Netflix’s best original series. There was talk that David Fincher simply didn’t want to do more of it, but later he seemed to imply it was Netflix who didn’t want to shell out for a third season.
Well, regardless, the two parties are still working together, continuing their long relationship that goes all the way back to Fincher producing and briefly directing the debut of House of Cards. Now, that has taken the form of The Killer, an upcoming film that features Michael Fassbender as an assassin. We have the first trailer for the film, which is out both in select theaters and on Netflix itself on November 10:
As you might expect for any Fincher film, it looks very cool, and interestingly, it seems to be more action-oriented that most of his other work, while maintaining his signature style.
You may recall that Fincher’s last collaboration with Netflix was the Gary Oldman-starring Mank about the writing of Citizen Kane. That led to ten Oscar nominations and two wins for Best Cinematography and Best Production Design. Fincher himself earned a nomination for Best Director, Gary Oldman was nominated for Best Actor and the film was in the Best Picture running as well. Needless to say, Netflix wants more Fincher. Here’s how The Killer is described:
“After a fateful near-miss, an assassin battles his employers and himself on an international manhunt he insists isn't personal.”
The trailer is frenetic and intense. Its biggest star is Michael Fassbender, of course, who has been on an acting break since uh, 2019’s Dark Phoenix where he played Magneto. Wait, is that right? That can’t be right. But he does allegedly have eight different movies in production. In 2016 he said he was going to take a long break from acting, though obviously he was in at least three movies between 2016 and 2019. But now he’s back and probably couldn’t have picked a better place to return.
LOS ANGELES, CA - FEBRUARY 12: (EXCLUSIVE COVERAGE) Actor Chris Parnell visits the Young Hollywood ... [+]
Tilda Swinton is also in the film, another big name, but the one that caught me the most off guard is Chris Parnell. Yes, the SNL actor Chris Parnell, voice of Cyril in Archer and Dr. Spaceman in 30 Rock. I certainly imagine his role is not comedic here, and I don’t think I saw him at all in the Fassbender-focused trailer.
Anyway, I can’t wait, and I probably do want to see this in actual theaters, not on Netflix, if it’s airing near me.
