The Nintendo Switch 2 will be released this year, Nintendo announced Thursday, with details about the highly anticipated successor to one of Nintendo’s best-selling consoles were revealed following weeks of speculation.
The new hardware will be the successor to one of Nintendo’s best-selling consoles.
Nintendo unveiled the Nintendo Switch 2 in a video Thursday, saying the latest console by the company would be released sometime in 2025, though it did not provide a specific release date or a price tag.
The latest iteration of the Nintendo Switch features black controllers with blue and red accents that connect magnetically to the larger screen, which features an additional USB-C port on top and a headphone jack.
The console will be able to play games from the previous Nintendo Switch, though Nintendo said some games “may not be supported on or fully compatible with” the Nintendo Switch 2, although it did not specify which games.
Nintendo also appeared to announce a new “Mario Kart” game that would be released with the Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo said it would announce additional details about the console on April 2, 2025. In an accompanying press release, Nintendo said it would allow customers to test the Nintendo Switch 2 at events in New York, Los Angeles and Dallas in April, with other events planned across Europe, Asia and Australia through May.
146.04 million. That’s how many Nintendo Switch units have been sold by Nintendo since the console’s launch in March 2017, according to the company. That makes the Nintendo Switch the second-best-selling console ever sold by Nintendo, behind the original Nintendo DS, which sold 154.02 million units.
The first Nintendo Switch was announced by Nintendo in 2016, with new hybrid features that allowed customers to play games with a handheld console or use a dock to play on their TVs. Nintendo later released new versions of the Nintendo Switch, including a smaller Nintendo Switch Lite and the Nintendo Switch OLED, which featured an upgraded display and other upgrades. Rumors about the Nintendo Switch’s successor have swirled online in recent weeks, including speculation about the dimensions of the new hardware.
