Despite being nominated for 10 Grammy Awards throughout her career, Nicki Minaj has yet to win a single trophy in what many would call a real shame. While she has been recognized in the rap fields and a few major categories with nods throughout the years, voters have consistently chosen other artists over her. This year could bring a change to her Grammy fortunes thanks to one recent release.

Minaj has plenty of work she can submit for the 2024 Grammys, but one track in particular is worth watching. It could potentially bring her into a category she has never been nominated in before, and voters may be more inclined to reward her for this specific project as it’s something different and a likely future standout submission.

The rapper's single "Barbie World" should be eligible for the Best Song Written for Visual Media Grammy. The song was written specifically for the movie Barbie and not only appears on the soundtrack, but those working on the film have confirmed to this writer that it does, in fact, appear in the film itself. This simple fact may make it a strong contender for the category.

One potential obstacle for Minaj's chances is that "Barbie World" isn't entirely original. It samples Aqua's "Barbie Girl," a hit song from the '90s that was also inspired by the toy. The track is similar enough and uses enough of the original that Aqua actually received a featured credit. This fact could potentially disqualify the production. Even if the Recording Academy does deem it eligible—which seems more likely—that it isn’t 100% the brainchild of Minaj and her collaborators could deter some voters.

"Barbie World" became and instant and significant hit upon its release, debuting at No. 7 on the Hot 100 chart. The nominees for Best Song Written for Visual Media usually consist of lesser-known but excellent pieces from movies, with one or two successful tracks included. The fact that "Barbie World" achieved top 10 success on the main songs chart and became a cultural moment may be enough for some voters to overlook any reservations.

The nominations for the 2024 Grammys won't be revealed until November 10, 2023, and the ceremony itself won't take place until the following February. With numerous eligible tracks for this category—including more than a dozen from the Barbie film alone—there is potential for serious competition. At the moment, Minaj may have an advantage due to her fame and the success of "Barbie World,” but there are still months to go before eligibility closes, and anything can happen.
