The National Weather Service warns that more winter weather is on the way for portions of Texas into the Lower Mississippi Valley and mid-south, bringing light snow Wednesday before a more significant storm on Thursday into Friday.

A wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain is forecast for the southern plains, which may bring dangerous driving conditions late Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Cold weather advisories are already in place Tuesday morning across a half-dozen southern gulf coast states, including Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi, where wind chill temperatures could fall into the teens.

The intersection of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana is also under a winter storm watch through Friday, with harsh weather expected to peak Thursday night.

A new low-pressure system is expected to form as soon as Wednesday that could bring rare snowfall of 2 to 5 inches to North Texas, including Dallas, and parts of Oklahoma and Arkansas could potentially get more than 4 inches.

Winter Storm Blair hit the midwest over the weekend and broke snow records in major cities, including Kansas City, where more than a foot of snow fell in 24 hours, and Cincinnati, which broke its single-day snow record for Jan. 5 with 5 inches of snow. The storm then moved east to Washington D.C., where the nation's capital was hit with 5 to 10 inches of snow and federal offices were closed both Monday and Tuesday. Several vehicle-related deaths have been blamed on the storm, which hampered travel across the region by car, plane and train. Tens of thousands of people remain without power Tuesday in the midwest and mid-Atlantic, including more than 60,000 in Virginia, 35,000 in West Virginia, 34,000 in Kentucky, 30,000 in Indiana and roughly 20,000 each in Missouri and Illinois, according to poweroutage.us.

4,968. That's how many U.S. flights were canceled this week, according to FlightAware, and another 28,470 were delayed. The highest number of cancelled flights came from airports in regions impacted by Winter Storm Blair, including Reagan National in D.C., St. Louis, Chicago O'Hare and Dallas-Forth Worth.
