Democratic New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy called on Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) to step down following his federal indictment Friday on criminal bribery charges, as pressure grows from Menendez’s own party for the longtime senator to leave office.
Sen. Bob Menendez was indicted Friday morning on bribery charges.
Murphy said the facts of the case “so serious that they compromise the ability of Senator Menendez to effectively represent the people of our state,” and called on Menendez to resign.
Menendez is accused of maintaining a “corrupt relationship” with three New Jersey businessmen who bribed the senator and his wife, who were each charged with three counts that include conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right and conspiracy to commit honest services fraud.
