As the New England Patriots reported back to Gillette Stadium for the start of mandatory minicamp, a starter for the roster since 2017 did not.
Veteran defensive tackle Lawrence Guy was among the players missing from Monday’s practice outside Gillette Stadium. His absence is “believed to be contract-related,” a source told Mike Reiss of ESPN.
Guy, who turned 33 in March, had previously not been spotted during New England’s open sessions of voluntary organized team activities. He stands halfway through a four-year agreement that brought a base value of $11.5 million with $3.075 million guaranteed.

No guaranteed money remains in the pact entering 2023.
The 6-foot-3, 315-pound Guy is instead scheduled to carry a base salary of $2 million. Up to $1 million in cumulative per-game roster bonuses can also be earned along with $3.5 million in incentives.
“I don’t think everybody’s here,” Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said during his Monday morning press conference when asked whether the entire team had reported to the facility. “But we’re working through a couple things.”
Per OverTheCap.com, Guy’s current cap hit of $3.573 million ranks 17th on New England’s books and 54th around the NFL on the interior defensive line. He has a $2 million base salary slated for 2024, as well.

The 2011 seventh-round draft pick out of Arizona State made stops with the Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts, San Diego Chargers and Baltimore Ravens before landing in Foxborough as an unrestricted free agent. Over the course of 101 games between his regular seasons and postseasons since then, Guy has totaled 99 starts.
For a career that got underway on injured reserve, practice squads and waiver claims, the Patriots tenure has spanned 367 tackles, 12 sacks, one forced fumble, four fumble recoveries and an interception. It has also spanned a pair of four-year deals, with the initial one adjusted in August 2020.
Guy, a Super Bowl LIII champion, was voted a captain that campaign on the way to securing a place on the latest Patriots All-Decade team. He received the organization’s Ron Burton Community Service Award in 2021 and was nominated for the league’s Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 2022.

Last season, Guy missed three starts due to a shoulder injury and finished with 46 tackles and two sacks across 44.5% of the defensive snaps.
Davon Godchaux, Christian Barmore, Carl Davis Jr., Daniel Ekuale, Sam Roberts, Jeremiah Pharms Jr. and undrafted rookie Justus Tavai make up the rest of New England’s depth chart at defensive tackle.
Mandatory minicamp runs through Wednesday before the calendar turns to summer break and training camp in July.
