There are several ways you can respond to bad reviews. You can try to learn from them. You can ignore them. Or you can embrace them and turn them into a positive. That’s what Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky did when it landed on a list of “most disappointing U.S. tourist attractions.” Mammoth Cave posted a playful response on Facebook on August 23 that reframed the conversation. “Come experience what has disappointed millions of people for over 225 years!” the park wrote, peppering its post with peppy exclamation points.
Mammoth Cave was officially established as a national park in 1941 and was discovered to be the world’s longest cave system in 1972. The total known length of the cave system to date is 426 miles. Over 650,000 visitors enjoyed (or didn’t enjoy) the park last year. “While we think the world’s longest cave system and over 4,000 years of human history is AMAZING, others find that the cave is ‘very dark’ and there is ‘nothing cool’ here to see,” park staff wrote. Mammoth Cave invited tourists to “experience the disappointment.” The park wrapped up the post with “A world of regret awaits you at Mammoth Cave!” along with a link for planning a visit.

The park’s humorous approach has netted over 8,000 comments and nearly 30,000 shares on Facebook. There was an outpouring of love for the park.“Sounds totally lame. I’m in!” wrote one commenter. “I’ve never wanted to regret something so much! Love this approach!” wrote another.
The post came from the park’s communications team. “We saw the article and thought that the best response would be to lean into the ‘designation’ and have a little fun with it,” says Mammoth Cave public information officer Molly Schroer. Schroer was surprised by the tremendous reaction to the post. “People have not only come to the defense of Mammoth Cave, but many have also shared their memories of their own visits over the years, which we love to see,” she says.
The origin of the study is a bit mysterious. Several sources, including regional television station WEHT, reported that the research was conducted by online casino Jeffbet, which supposedly used sites like Google and Tripadvisor to compile rankings of the most and least disappointing U.S. tourist attractions. Mammoth Cave came in third after the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Ohio. The Biltmore in North Carolina and the USS Arizona Memorial in Hawaii rounded out the top five biggest bummers. The National Mall in Washington, D.C. took top honors as the least disappointing attraction. Representatives of Jeffbet reached through online chat couldn’t confirm the origin of the study or provide a contact to follow up with.
The system at Mammoth Cave stretches for over 400 miles.
Mammoth Cave actually has a very nice 4.7 mark on Google reviews from nearly 11,000 reviews. But there will always be haters. Visitors who left single-star reviews dropped negative comments like “tourist trap” and “Misleading that we drove to see something amazing when it wasn't.” However, positive reviews far outweigh the negative. Happy visitors said “The caves were beautiful!” and “An absolute must for a day trip!”
Schroer says there are many compelling reasons to visit Mammoth Cave, including the geological formations and the chance to experience total darkness. “We also surprise people because we are not just a cave park,” she says. “We have over 80 miles of hiking, biking, horseback riding and canoe/kayak trails for people that might not be that into caves.” Schroer recommends using the Mammoth Cave National Park website to make reservations for cave tours before visiting. Tours can sell out. Book early and you won’t be disappointed.
