Nancy Pelosi has undergone hip replacement surgery, her office announced Saturday, after the former House speaker, who traveled with a congressional delegation to Luxembourg, fell down marble stairs.
Pelosi, 84, fell down marble stairs while traveling with a congressional delegation to Luxembourg.
Pelosi, 84, received a “successful” hip replacement and is “well on the mend,” her office said in a statement.
On Friday, Ian Krager, a spokesperson for Pelosi’s office, said Pelosi was hospitalized for an evaluation after an unspecified injury she sustained during an official engagement in Luxembourg.
It’s not immediately clear where Pelosi underwent the procedure, though her office said Pelosi was “thankful” to U.S. military staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, and the medical staff at Hospital Kirchberg in Luxembourg.

Krager said Pelosi was receiving treatment at a hospital for an injury, though details of the incident were not immediately known. People close to Pelosi and those familiar with the incident told the New York Times that Pelosi, who served as Democratic leader in the House for 15 years, tripped down the marble stairs at the Grand Ducal Palace in Luxembourg City. Her office said she would continue working from the hospital. Earlier in the week, Pelosi announced she would travel with a bipartisan congressional delegation to Belgium and Luxembourg to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place during World War II. The Democratic speaker emerita would be involved in events with veterans, their families, active service members and other government and military officials, according to her office.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., fell during a Republican luncheon just days before Pelosi’s injury. McConnell, 82, was seen returning to his office with a cut on his face, but did not return to the Capitol on Dec. 12. His office said in a statement McConnell was experiencing leg stiffness after the incident.
