The Chicago White Sox’s Tim Anderson and Cleveland Guardians’ José Ramírez—along with both teams’ managers—are facing suspensions after the two threw punches at one another, leading to a massive fight between the two teams during their game Saturday night, Major League Baseball announced Monday.

Anderson was suspended for six games, while Ramírez is out for six.

The Guardians’ manager Terry Francona, closer Emmanuel Clase and third base coach Mike Sarbaugh received one-game suspensions.

White Sox manager Pedro Grifol was also suspended for one game.

Anderson and Ramírez, as well as White Sox pitcher Michael Kopech and Guardians shortstop Gabriel Arias, were fined an undisclosed amount.

Anderson and Ramírez’s fight sprung from a verbal altercation that began after Ramírez slid into second base during the sixth inning of Saturday’s game. Shortstop Anderson soon put his fists up, assuming a boxing stance, and the two exchanged punches until Ramírez knocked Anderson over. At the same time, players and coaches from both teams flooded out of the dugouts and bullpens onto the scene. Anderson, who was trying to get up and continue fighting, was forcibly carried off the field by his team. It took the umpires more than 15 minutes to gain control and resume the game. Chicago won 7-4. After the game, Ramírez, through an interpreter, said that the verbal altercation was over his anger that Anderson had “been disrespecting the game for a while.” The two teams aren’t scheduled to play again until 2024.

“Anderson squared up,” radio announcer Tom Hamilton emphatically said on air as the fight ensued. “They’re fighting! They’re swinging! Down goes Anderson! Down goes Anderson!”

The Guardians are losing a star player in Ramírez at a crucial point in the season. The team starts this week 4.5 games behind the leader in the AL Central division, the Minnesota Twins. The Guardians will need to overtake them to win their division. The White Sox are 23 games under .500 and already appear to be focused on next season.

Anderson and Ramírez are both appealing their punishments.
