Paul, a 27-year-old YouTuber-turned-fighter, easily defeated Tyson, the 58-year-old heavyweight legend; their 31-year age gap is the largest in the history of the sport, and Paul’s victory was perhaps inevitable.
While the match itself was disappointing, the media circus around the event was extremely entertaining, with hype building before the big night, as Tyson fans hoped to see the return of “Iron Mike.”
It certainly didn’t hurt that Tyson was facing off against an obnoxious YouTuber who has built much of his brand on being disliked—there was a sense that many were tuning in just to see Paul face Tyson’s wrath.
Of course, the ever-eccentric Tyson provided some spectacular quotes before the match, claiming to take divine inspiration after smoking toad venom, which resulted in a meeting with God, who commanded Tyson to fight Paul.
Tyson also told a child interviewer that he didn’t care for his own legacy, as we are all doomed to die and turn to dust (cheery), and ominously suggested that he wanted to fight Paul to give his children a “different opinion” of him.
Tyson also displayed his sense of humor (and plenty of bare skin) after exposing his backside to the camera—not long after, the problems began.
Viewers were able to watch the match live on Netflix, which marks a first for the video-streaming platform; subscribers were even able to watch without paying an extra fee.
However, fans reported that they were experiencing frustrating technical difficulties, with Netflix’s livestream often buffering and freezing.
The broken broadcast was perhaps an omen of things to come.
The fight itself was a tough watch for those that were expecting Tyson to return to form and pull off some kind of Rocky-esque victory.
Despite coming out swinging, reality quickly set in for Tyson, as the age gap became increasingly obvious.
The energy quickly fell flat, with the two circling one another, Tyson waiting for Paul to come to him, unable to match the flurry of punches from Paul, who was appearing to hold back from delivering a killer blow.
Tyson got a few good swings in, and put in a remarkable performance for his age, but it wasn’t the dramatic comeback fans were hoping for—eventually, booing filled the stadium.
It certainly seemed a hollow victory for Paul, defeating a boxing legend long after his prime.
Paul, however, had the last laugh; according to the YouTuber, he made $40 million for the fight, while Tyson earned $20 million.
At least Paul ended the fight respectfully, bowing to the boxing legend, while Tyson appeared somewhat shellshocked.

The big fight embodied the tone of our current entertainment landscape, where novelty and nostalgia reign supreme, but can’t quite deliver on the hype.
