House Republicans will file an amicus brief supporting Steve Bannon’s emergency Supreme Court appeal, House Speaker Mike Johnson said Tuesday, offering a lifeline to the former Trump advisor who is fighting to avoid a prison sentence after being held in contempt of Congress for refusing to testify before the January 6 committee.

In an interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, Johnson said “We think the previous statement of the House [against Bannon] under Speaker Pelosi was incorrect,” adding he does not believe the January 6 committee was properly constituted.
Johnson said he believed the stance of the current Republican-led House on the matter should be known and “the court should take that into consideration.”
Johnson also discussed the matter in an interview with Fox News’s Sean Hannity, alleging the work of the January 6 committee “was tainted” and “they may have very well covered up evidence and maybe even more nefarious activities.”
Johnson told Hannity he thinks the brief filing “will help Steve Bannon in his appeal.”
In a statement to Axios, Bannon praised Johnson and the House leadership for showing “tremendous courage in repudiating the illegally constituted J6 Committee and its activities/investigations.”
