Mark Margolis, who portrayed Hector “Tio” Salamanca in both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, died at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City following a short illness. Margolis was 83.
"He was one of a kind. We won’t see his likes again," said Robert Margolis, the actor’s manager, in a statement. "He was a treasured client and a lifelong friend. I was lucky to know him."
Born in Philadelphia on November 26, 1939, Mark Margolis honed his skills as an actor as a student, at age 19, under Stella Adler at the Actors Studio.
In a career spanning decades, Margolis appeared in over 60 films incouding Scarface, The Thomas Crown Affair, and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. He also appeared in five Darren Aronofsky films (including Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, and Black Swan). And he was a frequent guest star on television in series like Kojak, Crime Story, Hannibal and Sex and the City. But it was his Emmy nominated performance as the silent-but-deadly Mexican cartel boss Hector “Tio” Salamanca that gave him the most attention.
