Margot Robbie broke her silence regarding the lack of Oscar nominations for herself and “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig on Tuesday night, according to multiple reports, but the actress focused on celebrating the film’s eight nominations rather than dwelling on the snubs that drew big reactions in Hollywood.

Robbie, speaking on a panel following a Screen Actors Guild showing of “Barbie” Tuesday night, said she was “beyond ecstatic” for the nominations the film did receive—including for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay—adding “it’s so wild,” Deadline reported.

Alongside her “Barbie” co-stars in Los Angeles, Robbie said Tuesday that while she’s not sad over her own lack of nomination for Best Actress, she did feel Gerwig deserved a nomination for Best Director, calling the film “a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing.”

When Oscar nominations were announced, critics and fans alike were surprised Robbie and Gerwig didn’t receive nominations for their roles, with co-star Ryan Gosling—who received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Ken—saying there’s “no Ken without Barbie, and … no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie.”

“We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact,” Robbie said Tuesday night, according to Variety. She also said after the screening, “There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed,” Variety reported.

  1. That’s how many Oscar nominations “Barbie” did receive. Though Gerwig and Robbie didn’t receive nods for director and actress, respectively, America Ferrera was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film, while Billie Eilish and Finneas received a nomination for best original song for “What Was I Made For?”

“Barbie” was well-received by critics and viewers, bringing in a record-breaking $1.45 billion at the global box office, including $636 million domestically, since the film was released in July. It is the only film directed by just a woman to have grossed more than $1 billion, according to Deadline, and was the highest-grossing film both domestically and worldwide in 2023. Despite its snubs at the Oscars, the film did take home the inaugural Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award at the Golden Globes earlier this year.
