The man who died in the explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck outside of the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on New Year’s Day was identified as Matthew Livelsberger, an active-duty U.S. Army soldier, according to multiple reports, as law enforcement continue probing the incident as a possible terrorist act.
Law enforcement said they are investigating the incident as a possible terrorist attack.
Law enforcement identified the man inside the Cybertruck as Livelsberger, who spent time at the Army base formerly known as Fort Bragg, according to the Associated Press, which cited three U.S. officials.
Livelsberger served as a U.S. Army special forces operations sergeant and was on leave from Germany at the time of the explosion, CNN reported, citing U.S. officials.
Both Livelsberger and Shamsud-Din Jabbar—identified as the suspect who drove into a crowded street in New Orleans, killing at least 15—served at Fort Bragg, though their time at the North Carolina base did not overlap.
Livelsberger and Jabbar rented their vehicles through Turo, a vehicle-sharing app, though the company said in a statement neither had a criminal background that Turo believes would have flagged them as a “security threat.”
This is a developing story.
