December couldn’t have started any better for Lyon fans, as the French club announced, in a statement on its social media pages, on Friday, December 1, extending Christiane Endler’s contract for three additional seasons, until 2027.

The Chilean goalkeeper who left Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 and signed with their all-time rivals, OL, quickly established herself as the team’s first option goalkeeper, thus, benching club legend Sarah Bouhaddi.

Her charisma, leadership, and most importantly, performances allowed her to be voted as the best female goalkeeper at FIFA The Best in 2021 and to appear in the FIFPRO Women's XI on several occasions.

Having retired internationally a few weeks ago, with 104 caps, Christiane Endler will be completely focused on the OL project led by the American entrepreneur Michelle Kang.

At 32 years old and 69 matches with OL, Endler will be looking to add more titles to the club’s trophy cabinet.

She has already won two French championships, two Trophées des Championnes, a Champions League, and a Coupe de France with les Fenottes.

The Chilean, who is considered as a leader in Lyon’s locker room, has quite the experience. She has previously played in all the major international competitions, from the World Cup and the Olympic Games to the Copa America and the Pan American Games.

Lyon’s new president made an appearance in Endler’s contract extension video with some powerful words. “Christiane is here to stay. Let’s keep making history. Together.”

There's surely no better way for Kang to show just how big her projects are for Lyon.

Olympique Lyonnais is surely delighted with Christiane Endler’s extension, as she’ll continue to write her name in the history of the club.

But, this is only the start.

Many of their star players are currently under their last year of contract with the club.

Kang must act fast if Lyon were to keep their squad intact.

Ada Hegerberg, Eugénie le Sommer, Delphine Cascarino, Griedge Mbock, Vanessa Gilles, and Vicki Becho, just to name a few, form a scary list of possible departures this upcoming summer.

If Endler’s contract comes as a relief for Sonia Bompastor, the former International will surely be hoping that her worldwide stars renew as soon as possible.

First women's Ballon d’Or winner in history in 2018, Ada Hegerberg was asked about her future during an interview with the Norwegian media vgsporten.

The Norwegian icon’s response was full of blur, leaving doubt about her future at the club. “There is no progress in my contract negotiations. My goal is to succeed with Lyon and Norway. I'm in a good place and I have big plans here for this season. My agents are doing a good job. We will see. It will be exciting to see what the future holds. I’m open to most things, I’ll be honest.”

Endler and her teammates have had a remarkable start to the season with 12 victories in 12 matches in the French league, D1 Arkéma.

Their next league fixture is on Friday, December 8, against Lille at 9 pm (CET).
