Love is Blind
Love is Blind makes constant appearances up and down Netflix’s Top 10 list, given that it releases in batches, rather than one binge dump like everything else. But now its latest reign has been ended by a show that debuted at number one. And like quite literally the entire top 5 of the service right now, it’s another reality/documentary series.
No aliens or murders this time, the show is “Beckham” about you guessed it, David Beckham, famed football star. The limited series interviews Beckham, his friends and family and teammates about his storied career. It’s a limited series, of course, and part of a recent Netflix sports documentary trend, as these all perform pretty well. This miniseries is four episodes long, with quite long 65-75 minute episodes. So all in all you’re going to be spending about five hours with Beckham and friends here. This could stay on top for a bit.
Top 10
Like I said, the entire top 5 is now reality series, Beckham, Love is Blind, The Great British Baking Show, Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal and Encounters. Sports, dating, baking, murder and aliens. A diverse selection, I suppose.
Only at #6 do we start getting into scripted series, the series finale of Sex Education. Then at #7 it’s the powerhouse of Virgin River, Netflix’s low-budget, highly-watched drama. The latest Demon Slayer season is at #8 and the new Castlevania show is at #9. And somehow it seems like The Pacific is being more watched than Band of Brothers, both licensed ports from HBO, and Pacific is still on the list at #10.
Normally I would talk about how a certain show’s performance would warrant more seasons but I don’t think there’s any show on this list where that discussion is relevant. Beckham is a limited series. Love is Blind will get 20 seasons at this rate. Murdaugh already has two seasons so I doubt there’s more to squeeze out of that. British Baking, also immortal. Encounters can find a few more alien stories, no doubt. Sex Education is over. Virgin River is already renewed. Demon Slayer will last until the source material is done. The Pacific is ancient and a miniseries. The singular question might be if Castlevania Nocturne gets picked up for a second season to resolve its cliffhanger. The fact that it made the list at all might be good enough.
The Top 10 list is getting deeply weird. Have no idea what reality series may pop up and be a huge hit next. I think Lupin just came out so in theory, that should be a big scripted hit, as the previous seasons absolutely were.
