Austin Ekeler has found his giddy-up, just in time for Monday night’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.
Ekeler, the Los Angeles Chargers Pro Bowl running back, has missed three games because of a high-ankle sprain. But Ekeler is expected to see a relatively full work load during this week of practices and he’s on track to test the Cowboys’ defense at SoFi Stadium.
He gauged his chances of suiting up on Monday at “99 percent.”
It was in the Chargers’ season-opening loss to the Miami Dolphins that Ekeler tweaked his ankle. Before being sidelined, Ekeler had 117 rushing yards, with a touchdown, and four receptions for 47 yards.
But that was the last the Chargers saw of Ekeler, who benefited from missing more action with L.A. enjoying a bye last week.
The Chargers have struggled to complement quarterback Justin Herbert with a strong running game, something that Ekeler’s return could change in a significant manner. He’ll also be another valuable target for Herbert.
With Ekeler being idle, the Chargers’ backups have rushed for but 144 yards on 53 carries and caught only five balls for 33 yards.
Ekeler can’t wait to join his teammates in Monday’s marquee match up.
“It’s a prime-time game, so we’ve got the world watching us,’’ Ekeler said. “It’s going to be fun like all our games are, but especially when it’s Monday night.’’
There were some long days and nights as the Chargers and Ekeler haggled over his compensation during the offseason.
Ekeler, in the final season of his four-year, $24.5 million deal, was given permission to find another team via a trade when talks stalled. But another party wasn’t willing to acquire Ekeler.
L.A. and Ekeler settled on a contract extension, one that could potentially pay him an addition $1.75 million this year.
Ekeler needs to hit standards on total yards (1,25 yards) and touchdowns (10) to trigger the payments and he could collect $150,000 as well if selected to the Pro Bowl.
Prior to this season, Ekeler had gained at least 1,500 yards in each of the previous two years as well as leading the NFL with 38 total touchdowns.
