A 53-year-old British man was arrested Monday evening after driving his car into a parade of people celebrating Liverpool FC’s Premier League victory, striking multiple pedestrians, though it's not yet clear how many people were injured.

Merseyside Police said in a statement it received reports of a driver colliding into a parade at about 6 p.m. local time Monday evening, and that it detained a 53-year-old man from the Liverpool area in connection with the incident.

The police’s statement said the driver’s car collided with “a number of pedestrians,” though they did not specify how many were injured.

Police said they are conducting “extensive enquiries” to “establish the circumstances leading up to the collision.”

Liverpool FC said in a statement it is cooperating with police and emergency services following the collision.

Thousands of people participated in Monday’s parade, and pedestrian Natasha Rinaldi told Sky News she “could just hear screams and screams” and that people “sounded desperate,” calling the incident a “horrible scene.”

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
