


Democratic candidate Angela Alsobrooks secured her party’s Senate nomination in Maryland Tuesday, setting up a key content against Republican nominee and former Governor Larry Hogan, while West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice won the GOP’s nomination for the Senate seat being vacated by Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin in the deep-red state.

The Associated Press called the Maryland GOP race for Hogan around half an hour after the polls closed at 8 p.m. ET and the former governor were ahead of his opponents by a comfortable 32 points, with 82% of the votes counted.
The popular former governor and fierce Trump critic acknowledged that the GOP was still the party of the former president in a New York Times interview, but added “I’m still a voice of reason to try to make sure we get back to a more traditional Republican Party.”
The AP called the Democratic race for Alsobrooks, a key local official, just before 10 p.m. ET, and with 65% of the votes counted, she held almost a 12-point lead over her closest rival.
After winning the race, Alsobrooks wrote on X: “On November 5, 2024, we are going to defeat Larry Hogan, keep Maryland blue, and keep our Senate under Democratic control.”
In West Virginia, the AP called the Republican Senate race for Justice less than an hour after the polls closed at 7.30 p.m. ET—who won 62% of the vote and beat GOP Rep. Alex Mooney.
The Trump-endorsed Justice is now almost certain to flip the seat being vacated by Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin in the red state.
After both races were called, Hogan congratulated in a post on X and wrote: “I know Angela well, and I value our respectful relationship. I look forward to a real debate on what this campaign is about: who can actually help fix the mess in Washington.”
