NFL star Joe Burrow has agreed to a record $275 million contract extension with the Cincinnati Bengals, according to multiple reports, making him the highest paid player in the league’s history.

The five-year contract for the Bengals quarterback includes around $219 million in guaranteed pay, both ESPN and the Associated Press reported citing unnamed sources.

The reported deal, which follows months of negotiations, will see Burrow earn on average around $55 million a year.

Speaking to the press earlier this week, Burrow said the Bengals team was “where I want to be my whole career” and he and the team were working to make that happen.

Burrow’s purported follows a series of record contracts signed by quarterbacks during the summer.

Burrow’s record contract comes in the backdrop of several other big money contracts signed by top quarterbacks across the league. In July, Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert agreed to a $262.5 million five year contract extension with the team which would see him earn around $52.5 million per season. In April, Baltimore Raven’s Lamar Jackson agreed to a $260 million five year contract extension—which would earn him $52 million on average. Jackson’s deal came weeks after Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts agreed to a $255 million five year deal.

$450 million. That is the value of the biggest contract in NFL’s history, signed in 2020 by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. However, that was a ten-year contract under which Mahomes makes around $45 million per year. The slew of record deals signed recently have led to some conversation about Mahomes being “underpaid” compared to his rivals.

Burrow missed his team’s pre-season games, as he is coming off a calf muscle injury which he picked up during summer training. The quarterback, however, appears to have fully recovered and is expected to start on Sunday as the Bengals face the Cleveland Browns.
