At least 73 people were killed by an explosion on Wednesday near the tomb of Iranian Gen. Qasem Soleimani, the former leader of Iran’s Quds Force who was assassinated by a U.S. drone strike exactly four years ago, in what Iranian officials are calling a terrorist attack.
The attack took place at Soleimani's tomb in Kerman, where his funeral was held in 2020.
“Numerous” people had gathered at Soleimani’s tomb in the southern Iranian city of Kerman on Wednesday for the fourth anniversary of his death, Iran’s state-run Islamic Republic News Agency reported.
At least 170 people were also injured after several gas canisters along the road to the cemetery, Reuters reported citing Iranian state television.
Video obtained by Al Jazeera appears to show a large crowd of people in the streets where the explosions took place, while first responders rescue victims on stretchers.
