“Inside Out 2” reportedly grossed another $100 million in its second weekend for total domestic box office sales of $285.6 million, besting the $282.1 million domestic gross of "Dune: Part Two" (which released March 1) to become the best-performing film of 2024 so far.

The movie had the best-ever second weekend performance for an animated film and the seventh-best second weekend for any film ever, Variety reported.

The second weekend gross puts it ahead of second weekend figures of notable releases like "Barbie" ($93 million), “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($92 million) and “Beauty and the Beast” ($90 million), but behind several other massive successes like “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($149 million) and “Avengers: Endgame” ($147 million).

The opening weekend for “Inside Out 2” was the second-best domestic opening for an animated film ever behind “Incredibles 2,” also from Pixar, and the biggest-ever opening for an animated movie worldwide at (it grossed $295 million globally to beat last year’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”).

“Inside Out 2” is the first movie to open to more than $100 million since “Barbie” was released last summer, and had the fourth-highest domestic opening for a PG-rated film, according to Deadline, behind “The Lion King,” “Incredibles 2” and “Beauty and the Beast.”

Whether “Inside Out 2” joins the $1 billion club. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” hit the mark last year, and “Inside Out 2” is already edging ahead of its two-week performance (“Mario” grossed $146.3 million in its domestic opening and $92 million the next weekend).

“Inside Out 2” was the best-performing film of the weekend. "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" was in second place ($19 million), followed by new release "The Bikeriders" ($10 million), "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" ($3.6 million) and "The Garfield Movie" ($3.6 million).

91%. That's the Rotten Tomatoes critics score for "Inside Out 2."

The summer box office, which runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day, had grossed $1.16 billion as of Sunday, well on the way to the $3 billion mark predicted by analysts. Last year's summer box office grossed $4 billion, the best since the pandemic began, but 2024 is expected to lag behind due to a slightly diminished release lineup (this is the first summer that opened without a Marvel movie since 2009) and production delays due to last year's actors and writers strikes. The summer is expected to make up about 38% of this year's projected $8 billion gross, according to Deadline (summer made up 45% of last year's total).
