Natalie Ammons, communications director for the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, said the jail is under control and operational as of Thursday afternoon, but that there is an active investigation.
Ammons told Forbes there was not yet information on what started the incident.
Earlier this month, former President Donald Trump and his 18 codefendants were booked and had mug shots taken at the Fulton County Jail, though just codefendant Harrison Floyd was held and he was released Wednesday.
- This was the fifth death of a Fulton County Jail inmate since the end of July, according to sheriff’s office releases.
The Fulton County Jail is notorious for its poor conditions and allegedly poor treatment of inmates. Last year, inmate Lashawn Thompson was found in a dirtied cell, “covered in lice and his own waste (with) his head in a toilet,” according to Atlanta Magazine, and his death drew national attention to the jail that had long had issues. In July, the Department of Justice announced it was launching an investigation into the jail and would examine “living conditions, medical and mental health care, use of excessive force, and protection from violence,” and if people with psychiatric disabilities are discriminated against within the jail. In less than four years, 23 people have died at the jail, Insider reported.
