Jakarta-listed Mayapada Healthcare—controlled by Indonesian billionaire Tahir—is expanding its footprint with the construction of a new hospital near Singapore starting.

Located on Batam Island, which is an hour by ferry to Singapore, Mayapada and its partner Apollo Hospitals—owned by Indian billionaire Prathap Reddy—is investing more than 1 trillion rupiah ($65 million) to build a 250-bed hospital in a special economic zone being promoted by the Indonesian government for tourism and healthcare.

The first phase of the 11-story hospital, which will occupy a site of about 1.7 hectares of a larger 2.9-hectare property, will be completed by 2027, Mayapada said in a statement. It will be equipped with advanced medical technology in cardiology, oncology, neurology, gastrohepatology, and orthopedics, with the capability to handle complex procedures such as organ transplants and cancer treatments, it added.

“We believe every Indonesian deserves access to international-standard healthcare without having to travel abroad,” Jonathan Tahir, president commissioner of Mayapada Healthcare and son of Tahir, said at the project’s ground breaking ceremony this week.

Indonesians spend as much as 200 trillion rupiah ($12 billion) annually for overseas medical treatment, Rizal Edwin Manansang, acting secretary general of the National Council for Special Economic Zones, said during the ceremony. “The issue has drawn serious attention from President Prabowo Subianto.”
