Liverpool have spent much of the summer transfer window rebuilding their midfield. Alexis Mac Allister joined from Brighton and was followed by Dominik Szoboszlai in making the move to the Anfield club. The Reds have also been linked with Khephren Thuram who has caught the eye for Nice in Ligue 1.
However, Jurgen Klopp has reportedly turned his attention to Liverpool’s defence with Levi Colwill believed to be on Liverpool’s radar. The 20-year-old was a standout performer for England at the U21 European Championships this summer and is widely seen as one of the best young centre backs in the country right now.
Colwill is a Chelsea player, but spent last season on loan at Brighton. The Seagulls also want to sign the youngster permanently this summer, but the Stamford Bridge club have so far refused to entertain any offers. Liverpool, however, would be able to put together a strong sales pitch to Colwill as he faces a career crossroads.

Last season, Liverpool struggled to maintain their defensive structure. The root of the problem was in the way their midfield failed to apply pressure in the centre of the pitch, frequently leaving the backline exposed, but Liverpool’s defensive unit could also do with revitalisation. This is where Colwill could fit in.
Despite being only 20 years old, Colwill is accomplished in possession. He is exceptional at playing out from the back and this would help get the best out of Liverpool’s attackers. Virgil van Dijk gives Liverpool a way to play directly into Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz on the wings and the addition of Colwill would give the Reds some balance in this respect.
There’s a chance Colwill would be a first team figure for Chelsea next season with Mauricio Pochettino keen to utilise a ball-player like the 20-year-old in defence. There’s no guarantee Colwill would be further up the pecking order at Anfield than he is currently at Stamford Bridge with van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip all more experienced options.
LONDON, ENGLAND - MAY 14: Roberto De Zerbi, Manager of Brighton & Hove Albion, talks to Levi Colwill ... [+]
In many ways, a permanent transfer to Brighton would make the most sense for Colwill given how he developed on loan under Roberto De Zerbi last season. “He helped me grow and realise what it takes to become the best. During games you hear him on the side and he'll be giving you information all the time. That's the sort of person he is, he just wants to help you progress as a player,” said Colwill when asked about the influence of the Italian on him.
Chelsea would be foolish to sell a player with the potential of Colwill to a Premier
