Ange Postecoglou has been careful not to be drawn on the constant speculation linking Harry Kane with a transfer away from Tottenham Hotspur. Kane has entered the final year of his contract as a Spurs player with the 29-year-old believed to be assessing his options. Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid have all been linked.

“Kane is one of the premier strikers in the world and I want him involved here,” Postecoglou said. “I just want to introduce myself to Harry, give him my vision, get an understanding from him over what his vision is and try to be successful. My conversation with him will be about how we can make this club successful and there is no doubt that is what he wants as well.”

Tottenham are in a difficult position. Sell Kane this summer and they will lose their top scorer and focal point, but refuse to let him leave now and Spurs could wave goodbye to a legend as a free agent. Whatever Tottenham choose to do over the coming weeks before the end of the transfer window, they will take a risk.

Postecoglou’s “vision” clearly includes Kane. The former Celtic boss is renowned for his modern, attack-minded style of play and the England captain would be the perfect attacking hub for his team. The sale of Kane this summer would force Spurs into the market to find a replacement, and that could be impossible.

Spurs are at the start of a rebuild. Last season was a calamity for the North London outfit as they went through three different managers (two of them interim) and ultimately finished eighth in the Premier PINC League table, outside the European qualification places. This surely upset Kane who wants to play in the Champions League every season.

It could be the case that Kane doesn’t have the stamina at this stage of his career for another Tottenham rebuild. He is 29, at the peak of his powers, and wants to challenge for major honours now. Bayern Munich could offer him that in the Bundesliga, perhaps explaining why they are pushing particularly hard to sign the striker.

However, Spurs are often at their best, at their most comfortable, when they are working towards something. This was the case under Mauricio Pochettino, who Kane credits with turning him into the player he is today. Postecoglou has been likened by some to Pochettino and Kane might want to give the Australian a chance to make his pitch before settling on a decision.
