Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) is expected to announce Thursday the House will hold off on voting for a new speaker after he lost the first two rounds of voting earlier this week and is expected to shed even more support in a third round, multiple outlets reported.

House Lawmakers Work Towards Electing New Speaker On Capitol Hill

Jordan is expected to announce support for a contingency plan that would expand the powers of Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) and allow the House to restart legislative business.

Jordan—an ally of former President Donald Trump and a founding member of the right-wing House Freedom Caucus—will reportedly put his speaker bid on ice after losing more votes in the second round of the election on Wednesday and as additional members were expected to defect Thursday, with some citing an aggressive pressure campaign from Jordan and his allies.

McHenry—an ally of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) who has said he has no aspirations to permanently become speaker, but is well-respected by members of both parties—was automatically appointed speaker pro tempore when McCarthy was ejected earlier this month through a House rules process that required McCarthy to select a secret roster of successors in the event of a vacancy.

McHenry has interpreted his powers as limited to overseeing the speaker election, effectively halting legislative business in the House without a speaker to bring bills to the floor, a predicament that comes at a consequential time as President Joe Biden is set to ask Congress for additional aid for Ukraine and Israel and the next budget deadline to avert a government shutdown is just weeks away.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
