Tony Hawk will host X Games TV coverage on ESPN and ABC in July 2023
Longtime X Games viewers think of one name when it comes to the event’s TV broadcast. That would be Selema Masekela, who was the face of X Games for 13 years.
And after a 10-year hiatus, Masekela returned to X Games Aspen 2023 as the property changed ownership hands and underwent a creative overhaul.
As organizers announced today, Masekela will also serve as host for this month’s X Games California on ESPN and ABC, alongside skateboarding legend Tony Hawk and versatile athlete-performer Jason Ellis, who hosts the Hawk vs Wolf podcast alongside Hawk and The Jason Ellis Show podcast.
It’s an all-star lineup of talent that X Games’ new leadership hopes will not only attract longtime viewers—those who saw Hawk’s first-ever 900 live in 1999 or remember Masekela interviewing snowboarder Shaun White after he earned the first perfect 100 in X Games history—but a new generation as well.
And understanding that the coveted 18-to-34 demographic has largely moved away from consuming sports via linear TV, X Games has also put together a vaunted streaming host team and onsite sideline reporters.
X Games personality Jack Mitrani, who has been involved in the telecast team since 2017 and is the most recognizable face for the youngest generation of viewers, will anchor the streaming coverage, joined by guest hosts including Brandon Graham, Alexa Score and others.
World Supercross correspondent Kristen Beat, whose versatility includes covering Supercross, NASCAR, football and baseball, will report from the sidelines.
Graham, who has hosted World of X Games since 2013, will once again do play-by-play for all skateboard events, while former pro skateboarder Corbin Harris—now a sports and entertainment manager—will provide skateboard park and vert analysis. Amelia Brodka will handle analysis for women’s skateboard events, and Gary Rogers for skateboard street specifically.
Jimmy Coleman will call play-by-play for BMX and Moto X events. Former X Games gold medalists Scotty Cranmer (BMX) and Blake “Bilko” Williams (Moto X) will provide analysis for their respective sports.
In addition to TV coverage on ESPN, ABC and ESPN2, YouTube, Twitch and Caffeine will stream every X Games event live, totaling 22.5 hours of live coverage.
New X Games CEO Steve Flisler formerly served as vice president of original content at Twitch. Under his guidance, the live broadcast will be the epicenter of the event, but the strategy is to make the content bite-sized and deliver it in many different ways.
Private equity firm MSP Sports Capital, which acquired a majority interest in X Games from ESPN Productions in October 2022, didn’t truly have the opportunity to shape X Games Aspen this past January, as it was largely already planed. But X Games California later this month represents a true opportunity for Flisler and his team to put their stamp on the iconic action sports event.
“We learned a lot from Aspen,” Flisler told me in May. “We sat down and deconstructed what worked, what we want to continue with, what we want to pivot on. How do we go back to the original elements of what has made X Games so special over 20-plus years? We plan to extend the broadcast team with both past and present athletes as well as other partners to help Selema tell the story.”
Back in January, when he was announced as a returning host for X Games Aspen, Masekela told me he was most excited to work with the production team to be “really thoughtful about the stories that we’re telling and show what the culture looks like today. That creates new fans, brings back old fans, and it’s that excitement that makes people feel like they don’t want to miss an X Games.”
One reason to make sure to tune in to this summer’s X Games? The chance to see Hawk drop in on the vert ramp. Hawk retired from competition in 2003 but shocked the world when he entered the vert best trick contest in 2021. Hawk was on hand for the broadcast but decided to drive home, grab his helmet and pads, and see if he still had it. Spoiler alert: he did.
Just two months ago, Hawk also competed in the vert best trick event at X Games Chiba.
Will he take a break from his hosting duties long enough to do the same later this month in Ventura? X Games is hoping you’ll tune in to find out.
X Games California will stage events along the Southern California coast leading up to finals weekend in Ventura July 21-23. For the first time in three years, spectators will be allowed onsite to view a Summer X Games event. Fans can buy tickets at XGames.com
