A senior Hezbollah commander on Monday was reportedly killed in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon, inflaming tensions as Western diplomats work to quell unrest amid growing fears the Israel-Hamas war will spiral into a wider regional conflict.
Hezbollah confirmed the death of commander Wissam Tawil on Monday, the BBC reported.
Tawil was a senior commander in Hezbollah’s elite Radwan unit.
Hezbollah, a Lebanon-based militant group many Western governments consider a terrorist organization, did not state the cause of Tawil’s death.
Reuters, citing three Lebanese security sources, report Tawil and another Hezbollah fighter were killed in an Israeli airstrike.
Tawil and the fighter were reportedly killed in a car during the strike on the southern Lebanese village of Majdal Selm.
One of the sources described the strike as “very painful,” with another adding: “things will flare up now.”
This is a developing story.
