Heirs to companies like Goya Foods, the largest Hispanic-owned food company in the U.S.; Bacardi, the largest private family-owned spirits company in the world; and Bass Oil Producers, owned by America's 36th-richest family, have listed for sale homes worth tens of millions of dollars.

The luxury housing market is continuing on an upward trajectory that started at the end of 2023, according to the Institute for Luxury Home Marketing, the result of a stable economy and extension of the market beyond traditional luxury hotspots like Los Angeles and New York.

Luxury homes in seasonal resort locations are expected to outperform traditional primary markets this year, according to Coldwell Banker, specifically in places like Naples, Florida, Park City, Utah and Lake Geneva in the Alps.

"Unicorn" properties, or those with specific and unique luxury amenities, are expected to be popular in 2024, Coldwell said, specifically ultra-luxury condominium buildings, branded residences connected to names like Four Seasons and Ritz-Carlton, and golf communities.

The so-called kitty-litter heiress—her late father founded the company that launched Jonny Cat litter—has listed an $88 million ranch in Santa Barbara, California combining three adjoining parcels. The listing includes 11.3 acres of land, a 7,500-square-foot home, pool house and private beach access. Stephens told the Wall Street Journal her parents, John and Betty Stephens, hosted charity events at the house attended by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, among others.

An eight-bedroom Upper East Side residence that belonged to the late oil heiress Anne Hendricks Bass has dropped in price by $10 million since it was first listed in April of 2023. Now with an asking price of $60 million, the 12th-floor home in a pre-war building on Fifth Avenue includes 13-foot ceilings, five wood-burning fireplaces, two "staff rooms" in an adjoining building and panoramic views of Central Park South. Hendricks Bass was married to Sid Bass, heir to the Bass Oil Producers fortune, until 1988 when she received a $200 million divorce settlement, the equivalent to roughly $533 million today.

A Mediterranean-style home with eight bedrooms and 11 bathrooms spread over a sprawling main house and separate pool house has been listed by Andy Unanue, whose grandparents founded Goya Foods. The $32.7 million listing includes a pool, loggia, dual grand staircases and four-car garage.

Lori Krohn Sarofim, the daughter of one-time billionaire oilman Tracy Krohn, is selling a 15,000-square-foot French château in Houston's River Oaks neighborhood for $27 million. The estate includes five bedrooms, a two-story closet, gym, garden room and a biometric-access safe room, and would break an area real estate record if it sells at its asking price, according to the Houston Chronicle.

A $17.5 million Orlando-area home owned by liquor heiress Hilda Bacardi has been on the market for almost a year. The seven bedroom, 10 bath house is within the Four Seasons Private Residences on the grounds of Walt Disney World and includes two laundry rooms, an elevator, pool, terraces on both floors and an expansive home theater, as well as a fully enclosed pool cabana. The $17.5 million price tag represents a drop from the $19 million it was listed for last April, according to the Orlando Business Journal, and is well above the $7 million Bacardi purchased it for in 2018.

The home of jewelry heiress Rebecca Oppenheimer, whose family ran the South African De Beers Diamond Consortium for nearly 100 years, sold to "Karate Kid" actor Scott Strader for $2.3 million last year, a fraction of its initial $11 million listing price. The home is located in the small town of Tenino, Washington and was built by the heiress with the theme of "Guggenheim Museum meets spaceship." The estate includes a terraced garden, helicopter pad, barn with guest quarters, 80-foot-long saltwater pool and 6,500-square-foot main home.

Newly minted billionaires in 2023 inherited more cash and assets than they made themselves through investments and entrepreneurship, according to a study by Swiss bank UBS. It marked the first time in the nine years of UBS’ Billionaire Ambitions Report that more was inherited than made, the bank said. A total of 137 people achieved billionaire status for the first time in the 12-month study period—53 of them inherited $150.8 billion collectively and 84 self-made billionaires made $140.7 billion in the same time period.
