Vice President Kamala Harris’ lead over former President Donald Trump remains unchanged after the Democratic National Convention last week, according to a new Morning Consult survey that found the majority of voters didn’t pay attention to most of the major speeches and events—though more voters see Democrats as unified.

Harris leads Trump by four points, 44% to 48%, with 4% of voters undecided and 4% saying they support another candidate, according to the Aug. 23-25 poll of 7,829 registered voters (margin of error 1), the same findings as an Aug. 16-18 poll.
Despite the DNC reaching about 14% more viewers than the Republican National Convention in July, only three major events from the convention captured the attention of a majority of voters: the speeches by Harris, former First Lady Michelle Obama and former President Barack Obama.
Less than half of voters surveyed said they heard “a lot” or “some” about five other speeches and events, including President Joe Biden’s and vice presidential candidate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s.
There were some bright spots for the party, even if they didn’t translate to a polling boost for Harris: more voters (20% versus 35%) said they view Democrats as “united” after the DNC versus before and fewer (36% versus 25%) view Republicans as united.
The survey is one of the first taken since the convention and among multiple over the past month that show Harris has erased Trump’s lead over Biden.
1.5. That’s how many points Harris leads Trump by nationally, according to RealClearPolitics’ polling average, a 1.6-point swing in Democrats’ favor since Biden dropped out of the race. Harris leads by 3.5 points according to FiveThirtyEight’s weighted average.
Democrats held their convention last week in Chicago on the heels of a seismic shift in the campaign with Biden’s exit from the race on July 21. Harris’ candidacy has reunited the party, boosted fundraising and drawn renewed attention to the race among voters who showed historically low interest in the Trump-Biden contest. The convention featured a deep line-up of celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling, Kerry Washington and musical performances by Pink, Stevie Wonder and John Legend. Harris closed out the event on its final night, according to tradition, blasting Trump repeatedly in her speech over his roles in the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, Roe v. Wade’s reversal and the failure of a bipartisan border security package he effectively killed in Congress earlier this year.
