The Golden Globe Awards, the first major stop on the months-long road to the Academy Awards, aired on Sunday night, offering the first indication of who might be the frontrunners in the race for Oscar glory.

The Globes aired live on CBS and on Paramount+ on Sunday, Jan. 5, at 8 p.m. EST. The “Live From E!” red carpet pre-show begins at 6 p.m. EST on E!, while the Variety and Entertainment Tonight pre-show starts at 6:30 p.m. EST on CBS, Paramount+ and the Variety website.

Comedian Nikki Glaser will host the ceremony. Glaser takes the hosting reins from Jo Koy, whose performance last year was slammed online after many jokes fell flat or were deemed sexist, including jabs at “Barbie” and Taylor Swift. Glaser’s hosting gig caps off her breakout year in 2024, where she had an acclaimed performance at the roast of Tom Brady and released an HBO special, “Someday You’ll Die.” Glaser told the New York Times she has consulted 10 writers for her set and ran 91 test runs at clubs to refine her material, adding she won’t roast celebrities as hard as she has been known for because she isn’t an established film and television star like previous hosts Tina Fey and Ricky Gervais.

“Emilia Pérez,” a French crime musical directed by Jacques Audiard, led this year’s nomination tally and set the record for the most nominations ever for a film in the musical/comedy categories, with 10. “Anora” and “The Substance” earned five nominations each on the comedy/musical side. For drama categories, “The Brutalist” leads with seven nominations, while “Conclave” earned six. Variety and Vanity Fair predict “Emilia Pérez” will win the best musical/comedy prize, while USA Today projected “Wicked” would win. Variety, USA Today and Vanity Fair all predict “The Brutalist” will win best drama. Awards bettors on GoldDerby project the acting trophies will go to Angelina Jolie (“Maria”) and Adrien Brody (“The Brutalist”) for the drama categories, Mikey Madison (“Anora”) and Jesse Eisenberg (“A Real Pain) in the comedy categories and Zoe Saldaña (“Emilia Pérez”) and Kieran Culkin (“A Real Pain”) in the supporting races.

Only about half the time. Vulture reported in 2021 that of the more than 400 Globes handed out in the film categories over the previous 30 years, about 200 of those went on to win the corresponding Oscar. The Globes were particularly accurate last year: “Oppenheimer” won the Oscar for Best Picture after winning Best Drama at the Golden Globes, and every acting winner at the Oscars first won a trophy at the Globes. But the year prior, only two of the Oscar winners in the four acting races had won at the Golden Globes, and Best Picture winner “Everything Everywhere All at Once” had lost the Best Comedy Globe to “The Banshees of Inisherin.” The Globes and Oscars voting bodies don’t overlap. The Globes are voted on by a small group of 334 entertainment journalists spanning 85 countries, while the Academy Awards are decided by a much larger group of more than 10,000 industry professionals in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The Critics Choice Awards are the next stop for the awards race, airing one week after the Globes on Jan. 12. Oscar nominations will be announced Jan. 17, followed by the Academy Awards ceremony on March 2.

$1 million. That’s the total value of all the gifts offered to winners and presenters at the Golden Globes, according to Robb Report, which is double the value of last year’s gift bag. The Globes are still seeking to emerge from years of controversy and to reestablish the ceremony as the first prestigious stop in awards season. This year’s ceremony is the second under new leadership after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was dissolved following controversies including allegations the HFPA had no Black members, ran smear campaigns and engaged in questionable financial practices.
