“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” opened in 3,861 North American theaters this weekend and was originally expected to earn somewhere between $50 million and $55 million, according to Variety.

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” earned more than most of the franchise’s previous opening weekends except 2014’s “Godzilla” which earned more than $93 million in its opening weekend.

The only film to have a better opening weekend so far in 2024 is “Dune: Part Two” with $82.5 million.

$135 million. That’s how much “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” cost to produce, according to Deadline.

The release of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” comes three years after “Godzilla vs. Kong,” the most recent installation in the franchise, opened in theaters. That release, however, saw a smaller box office opening weekend of $31 million, likely due to its simultaneous HBO Max release. “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” stars Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens and Kaylee Hottle. The film has a 55% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
