In a surprising move in a high-profile evidentiary hearing Thursday afternoon, Fulton County, Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis took the stand to testify amid accusations she engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a lead prosecutor in former President Donald Trump’s election interference case, as she faces mounting calls for her to be disqualified.

Willis testified she has “been very anxious to have this conversation,” saying it “only makes sense” that she would testify after prosecutor Nathan Wade, the man she hired to prosecute the case against Trump and 18 co-defendants and with whom she allegedly maintained a private and inappropriate relationship.

Willis, along with several of her employees, had been subpoenaed to testify at the evidentiary hearing to determine whether she should be disqualified from the case—an argument multiple Trump co-defendants have made over claims she violated conflict of interest laws by dating Wade—though Willis had attempted to stave off her testimony, filing a motion earlier this month calling the subpoena an “effort to support reckless accusations.”

In her testimony, Willis took questions from attorney Ashleigh Merchant, who represents one of Trump’s co-defendants, saying Merchant’s “interests are contrary to democracy,” adding: “It’s highly offensive when someone tries to implicate that you slept with somebody the first day you met with them.”

This is a developing story and will be updated.
