Ford Motor Company is recalling over 850,000 units due to low-pressure fuel pumps which could fail and lead to an engine stall while driving, according to a Monday notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The NHTSA warned the fuel pumps of certain Ford and Lincoln vehicles “increases the risk of a crash” and that a remedy is under development, with the manufacturing company sending letters to car owners by July 14 notifying them of the safety risk.

Separate letters will be sent to owners once the remedy is available, the recall notice states.

Ford said fuel pump failure is “more likely to occur” under warm weather and hot fuel conditions and that warnings of imminent pump failure include poor engine performance or a reduction in engine power, CBS News reported.

The NHTSA and Ford have not said whether the remedy would require a visit to a dealer.

According to NHTSA data, Ford has recalled more than 1,600 units this year so far due to a slew of issues, including damaged wire harnesses, unclear safety information, sudden loss of brake function, failed running lights and overheating batteries among dozens of reported problems since January.
