Former officers Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr. and Justin Smith are facing a number of charges, including excessive force, failure to intervene, deliberate indifference and conspiracy to witness-tamper, ABC News reported.
The five men also face criminal court charges in Shelby County for second-degree murder, aggravated assault and more.
They have all pleaded not guilty to the state charges.
In January, Nichols was pulled over for alleged reckless driving by a group of officers from the SCORPION Unit—which stood for Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods—who then attacked and beat him; he died three days later from excessive blood loss.
The indictment comes months after the Department of Justice announced an investigation in July into the Memphis Police Department’s use of force.
