Olympique Lyonnais women’s team is back in action three weeks after the end of the World Cup in Australia in a head-to-head against Paris Saint Germain for the count of Le Trophée des Championnes.

A first match for a first title against their all-time rivals is a match not to miss.

Le Trophée des Championnes is a yearly match between the French League Champion and the French Cup Champion. However, since Sonia Bompastor’s team clinched the two titles, thus, their opponent is last season’s D1 Arkema’s second-ranked team PSG.

The match will take place on Sunday, September 10 at the Stade de l'Aube in Troyes and will be broadcast live on Canal+.

This match will give the first indications of the 2023-2024 season between the two usual contenders for the French national titles in the last decade.

Olympique Lyonnais is finishing its intensive preseason with another camp. Following a first short training camp in La Plagne in August and four friendly matches, the “Lyonnaises” players arrived on Tuesday in Divonne-les-Bains to kick off a second, longer and more dense preparation camp.

Sonia Bompastor's group, in full force with the return to business of Australia’s Ellie Carpenter, continues to gain momentum with their sights set on the first of four possible trophies of the season: Trophée des Championnes, D1 Arkema, Coupe de France, and UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Following the 2021/2022 season, the second edition of the Trophée des Championnes was held in Dunkerque and witnessed Olympique Lyonnais triumphing against their lifelong rivals, with the only goal scored by Danielle van de Donk.

The 8-time Champions League winner also won the first edition back in 2019 against the same opponent.

For her first probable match as an Olympique Lyonnais player, Kadidiatou Diani can expect an unfriendly welcome from her former PSG teammates, especially those in the backline.

The 28-year-old French international finished the 2022-2023 D1 Arkema season as the MVP and the top scorer with 17 goals in 17 matches for PSG.

In recent years, the French international has proved herself as a major figure for the French national team as well as for her former club, Paris Saint Germain, which she joined back in the summer of 2017.

She has yet to win the Champions League but she has won the French League with Les Parisiennes in 2021 and the Coupe de France on two occasions, in 2018 and 2022.

Bompastor’s side signed three other players to reinforce the squad ahead of an upcoming challenging season. Melchie Dumornay’s signature was finalized in January 2023 but the Haitian wonderkid continued the season with her club Stade de Reims. She joined the team’s preseason after a successful debut World Cup.

The experienced German goalkeeper, Laura Benkarth, was signed from Bayern Munich as a backup for Christiane Endler, and Kysha Sylla rejoined the squad after having been sent on loan at Dijon DFCO.

On the departure line, 7 players said goodbye to their OL adventure.

One of the club’s legends and former France captain Amandine Henry signed with Angel City in the NWSL. Signe Bruun joined Real Madrid, Janice Cayman bounced back at Leicester City in the WSL.

Levante UD signed goalkeeper Emma Holmgren, Alyssia Paljevic will be defending Montauban’s colors and Célia Bensalem was convinced by Toluca Femenil’s project in Liga MX in Mexico.

However, Catarina Macario’s departure is the most significant. The 23-year-old Brazilian-born USWNT midfielder joined the French side in 2021 and went on to score 29 goals in 46 appearances. Having suffered an ACL tear against Issy during the last match of the 2021/2022 season, Chelsea’s new player, Macario had a blank season with OL.

With her contract expiring in June 2023, Macario decided to seek a new challenge in England with the Women’s Super League winners, Chelsea.

For the Parisians, the summer transfer window wasn’t as calm as Lyon’s. 12 players left while 11 were signed to strengthen the team’s squad.

Barbara Votikova joined Tottenham, Li Mengwen signed for Brighton, Sweden's defender Amanda Ilestedt is now an Arsenal player, Ashley Lawrence joined another London team, Chelsea, Montpellier signed Soufiya Ngeuleu, Alice Pinguet is at Dijon DFCO.

Marina Georgieva went all Italian and signed for Fiorentina, Estelle Cascarino followed through and signed with the giants Juventus, and Baby Jordy Benera was sent on loan at Levante Las Planas following the signature of her first professional contract with her childhood club.

Two former French Internationals, Kheira Hamraoui and Sarah Bouhaddi, also left the club. Their contracts came to an end and the Parisian management did not offer them an extension.

On the arrival line, PSG signed Katarzyna Kiedrzynek from Wolfsburg, Viola Calligaris from Levante, Ana Vitoria from SL Benfica, Thiniba Samoura from Paris FC, Aissatou Tounkara from Manchester United and Nicole Payne from West Virginia University in the USA.

Many players returned home after loan spells. Magnaba Folquet was at Fleury FC, Océane Hurtré played at Dijon, Jade Le Guilly tried Spanish football with Real Sociedad, Alice Pinguet spent time at Issy and Hawa Sangaré was in Italy with Pomigliano.

The first Ballon d’Or Féminin winner, the Norwegian superstar Ada Hegerberg is back and running for her club after a rather disappointing FIFA Women’s World Cup with her country.

In an interview with OL's official website, Ada talked about this summer upset and showed readiness for what’s coming. “There was the World Cup, unfortunately I had a small adductor injury at the worst time. I am still very ambitious and I still want to win everything this year. It's been a while since I've done any real preparation because of my injuries,” before adding “I'm very hungry for the upcoming season. I feel it's going to be a great season.”
